Safety in Races

How can I take responsibility as an athlete and what conversations should I be having with my coach? What is in MY CONTROL!?

Physical:

  • Training program and  appropriate preparation- be event specific

  • Travel; when in relationship to the event, how to arrive in best condition, know your place of arrival and what’s available.

  • Nutrition plan well practiced and outlined; hydration, sodium, fueling

  • Pre Race Warm Up- Hot weather versus cold weather. What’s available.

  • Medical clearance; health and injury.

Skills:

  •  Swim navigation and readiness for conditions

  •  Bike skills; descending, aid stations, groups, getting nutrition, cornering

  •  Run pacing and troubleshooting

Mental:

  • Goal setting appropriate

  • Clear race planning; pacing, nutrition, gear, course knowledge

  • Confidence in game day decision making and troubleshooting

  • Using gadgets appropriately 

  • Knowledge of rules, course, conditions

  • Focus plan and refocus plan

Equipment:

  • Skill level appropriate

  • Well practiced on similar course terrain when possible.

  • Conditions appropriate- wetsuits, staying warm, staying cool, wind, shoes, wheels, gearing, helmets.

  • Course terrain appropriate
